Mable Skaaning came to Nihgi Métis Seniors Lodge after years raising her seven children. When her oldest son died in 2018, she moved into the lodge from Calgary. “I was always the one doing the cooking,” she said, on her motivation for making a new home at Nihgi in Edmonton’s Montrose neighbourhood. “Here, they do the cooking, they wash the clothes, make the beds.” Mable, 80 years old, also appreciates one of the most rewarding attributes of the assisted living residence–the sense of family and community.
